I'm not sure. 574 00:41:36,040 --> 00:41:37,040 Because... 575 00:41:37,040 --> 00:41:39,940 They don't squawk or caw like a crow. 576 00:41:40,040 --> 00:41:42,040 They kind of make a more of a shrill... 577 00:41:43,040 --> 00:41:43,640 ...noise. 578 00:41:43,740 --> 00:41:44,840 So Castle Barry. 579 00:41:46,240 --> 00:41:48,040 The raised ground overlooking... 580 00:41:48,040 --> 00:41:52,040 ...the Castle Street Car Park occupies a strategic and defensive location. 581 00:41:52,040 --> 00:41:56,440 So that's over there. The barracks. You can just see a corner of the barracks there. 582 00:41:57,040 --> 00:41:57,940 Behind the trees. 583 00:41:58,740 --> 00:42:02,140 So this was strategically important to the lads back in the day. 584 00:42:02,140 --> 00:42:05,140 Because it was raised and you could see all around you. 585 00:42:07,340 --> 00:42:12,140 And the Norman de Barry family built a castle here in 1235. 586 00:42:13,340 --> 00:42:15,440 Following the Norman conquest of Connacht. 587 00:42:16,240 --> 00:42:18,640 Castle Barry derived its name from this castle. 588 00:42:18,940 --> 00:42:20,440 Which had a turbulent history. 589 00:42:21,140 --> 00:42:24,340 And in 1385 it was captured by Cormac McDonough. 590 00:42:24,840 --> 00:42:27,140 Who was then driven out by the local Burks. 591 00:42:27,740 --> 00:42:28,540 And Burk is a... 592 00:42:28,540 --> 00:42:30,800 It's a very common name around Castle Barry. 593 00:42:30,800 --> 00:42:32,360 Because it's the pharmacy I think. 594 00:42:32,940 --> 00:42:34,240 And there's a few other shops as well. 595 00:42:35,140 --> 00:42:36,140 A lot of people call it Burk. 596 00:42:36,640 --> 00:42:37,440 In 14... 597 00:42:37,440 --> 00:42:39,040 I don't know if there's... 598 00:42:39,040 --> 00:42:42,640 That's a case of direct descendancy from the Burks from that era. 599 00:42:42,740 --> 00:42:43,080 But anyway. 600 00:42:43,660 --> 00:42:47,860 In 1411 the castle was burnt by the O'Connors from Sligo. 601 00:42:48,320 --> 00:42:50,900 It was the focus of several sieges and battles. 602 00:42:51,040 --> 00:42:53,240 Between 1576 and 1641. 603 00:42:53,240 --> 00:43:00,700 In 1680 Sir Richard Downing described the castle as a very fair large barn. 604 00:43:00,700 --> 00:43:04,640 And two round towers or castles therein. 605 00:43:04,640 --> 00:43:06,240 And a good large house. 606 00:43:06,240 --> 00:43:08,440 We're coming to the end of this now. 607 00:43:08,440 --> 00:43:14,900 In 1752 Richard Pocock recorded a new house on the castle site. 608 00:43:14,900 --> 00:43:16,900 Which incorporated the two towers. 609 00:43:16,900 --> 00:43:22,040 In 1795 the Bingham family sold the castle and house to the war department. 610 00:43:22,360 --> 00:43:26,560 And three years later the house was pillaged during the French occupation of the town. 611 00:43:26,560 --> 00:43:34,220 The barracks construction started in 1828. 612 00:43:34,220 --> 00:43:34,880 of foot. 613 00:43:34,880 --> 00:43:35,880 In September 1831. 614 00:43:35,880 --> 00:43:36,560 In 1831. 615 00:43:36,560 --> 00:43:38,420 No surface trace of the house or castle survived. 616 00:43:38,420 --> 00:43:42,880 But the stones that form the retaining wall below the barracks are believed to come from them. 617 00:43:42,880 --> 00:43:45,380 So we've got these stones here in this wall. 618 00:43:45,380 --> 00:43:51,580 Very close to the castle. 619 00:43:51,580 --> 00:43:53,780 I'd love to be able to get into the castle bar now. 620 00:43:53,780 --> 00:43:55,780 And into the barracks and have a look. 621 00:43:55,780 --> 00:43:56,780 But I think it's closed off. 622 00:43:56,780 --> 00:43:58,780 Although they do utilise it from time to time. 623 00:43:58,780 --> 00:44:00,780 And use kind of... 624 00:44:00,780 --> 00:44:01,780 Kind of... 625 00:44:01,780 --> 00:44:03,280 They have like funfares and... 626 00:44:03,280 --> 00:44:05,980 Kind of market days there as well. 627 00:44:05,980 --> 00:44:07,980 It's beyond that wall. 628 00:44:07,980 --> 00:44:09,480 And you go around and in that way. 629 00:44:09,480 --> 00:44:10,980 Maybe I could go for a look. 630 00:44:10,980 --> 00:44:13,280 And then try and get in and go out the other side. 631 00:44:13,280 --> 00:44:16,280 But I'm not 100% sure whether or not that's possible. 632 00:44:16,280 --> 00:44:21,280 We'll cross over here. 633 00:44:21,280 --> 00:44:25,280 I might try and get in for a look there. 634 00:44:25,280 --> 00:44:26,280 And see. 635 00:44:26,280 --> 00:44:28,280 Because if I can do that. 636 00:44:28,280 --> 00:44:30,280 And then go through there. 637 00:44:30,280 --> 00:44:32,280 Then... 638 00:44:32,280 --> 00:44:34,280 I'd be able to come out the other side. 639 00:44:34,280 --> 00:44:35,780 And then make it to Blue Thunder. 640 00:44:35,780 --> 00:44:36,780 And get a chip. 641 00:44:36,780 --> 00:44:37,780 But... 642 00:44:37,780 --> 00:44:40,080 At the moment if I go down Castle Street Way. 643 00:44:40,080 --> 00:44:41,780 I'm not sure if Believe is going to be there. 644 00:44:41,780 --> 00:44:42,280 So... 645 00:44:49,280 -->
